ractically supplanted all other kinds for Passenger Service, and its superior sslfety,
efficiency and econorm of operation have ceased to be debatable questions.

While scarcely any other kind of Hydraulic Passenger Elevator is now in use in any
first-class building, yet we are constantly brought in competition with all forms of cheap

Elevators. We never undertake to compete in price with these inferior machines, becausi
we cannot do it without lowering our high standard of quality, and thus cheapening our

work; and we believe that in a matter of a machine so important to have SAFE and

THE OTIS STANDARD KLKVATOR.

THE "LEONARD" SYSTEM OF CONTROL

FOR

ELECTRIC ELEVATORS

For situations where minimum power in starting- is indispensable, and for isolated plants we can
now, under an exclusive license, operate electric elevators by what is known as the LEONARD SYS-
TEM OF CONTROL, which makes it possible to start an elevator with the most perfect graduation
of speed and power.

This system differs essentially from ether methods by virtue of the fact that the regulations
are effected in the electric generator supplying the motor and not in the motor itself.

When it is desired to reverse the direction of the motor, the magnetism, and, consequently, the
current of the generator, is reversed. Similarly, when a lower pressure is desired on the motor, in
order to go slower, the pressure produced by the generator is reduced, thus making the power required
proportional to the work done in all instances, so that, for instance, to move a load at one-
speed required but one-quarter of the power needed for full speed.

The control, it will thus be seen, is effected entirely by varying the strength and direction of the

current in the field of the generator.

This system is particularly adapted to operate elevators in private residences.

Information for Architects and Owners.

From our experience with elevator service, as best adapted to the various buildings in which they
are to be placed, we submit some suggestions to architects, builders and others.

Location.

In planning buildings, no single point is of greater importance in the primary consideration
than location of the elevator plant ; since, for buildings of greater height than three stories, the
elevator service is generally considered by tenants the most important feature of the building. To
obtain the most satisfactory results, the elevator should be placed directly opposite the main entrance,
as near the front of the building as possible, and if several machines are required, they should be
located together, rather than be placed in different positions in the building.

Number.

The number of passenger elevators required depends entirely upon the size and nature of the
building under consideration. It is difficult to lay down any rule which may be followed without
exception, but in a general way our experience proves that for an average office building, one high
speed elevator will serve the requirements of from thirty to forty offices to good advantage. This
number will, of course, vary according to the business of the tenants.

Capacity.

It has been found that better service is obtained by passenger elevators adapted to lifting an
average load at high speed, than a maximum lifting capacity running at slow speed, as was formerly
the construction preferred. While the maximum capacity varies according to existing conditions at
a building, we advise for an average office building a maximum lifting capacity of from i, 5 co pounds
to i, 800 pounds, with as high speed for an average load of from five to six passengers, as can be
obtained from the power employed.

The elevator manufacturer should not be asked to include any work that does not properly
belong to him, such as boiler, gas engine, motor, preparing and enclosing the hatchway, foundations
for machinery, supports for tanks, for guide posts or for sheave beams, steam connections to pump
electric annunciator, gas or electric fixtures, or any work he does not produce himself which is
outside of elevator building, and can be directly contracted for more cheaply by the owner.

We will be glad at all times to furnish estimates, detailed specifications and plans for any

kind of elevator construction . • *

Our elevator business has been established 37 years, and we have unlimited means to avail
ourselves of all the latest inventions in safety appliances and forms of construction
are exclusively built at our Works at Yonkers, N. Y., which are the most
devoted solely to the manufacture of elevators.

These elevators
extensive in the world,

Prices.

The Price of Elevators depends on height of building, size of hatchway, weight to be raised, speed of car,
etc., and it is therefore necessary to have the following particulars before an estimate can be made.

Is elevator to be used for Passenger, or Freight ?
Is elevator for Hotel ? Store ?

Office building ?

Factory ?

Residence ?

If none of these, then state what kind of building

Have you City water pressure which could furnish power for )
elevator ? If so, how many pounds pressure per square inch ;-

is available at level of sidewalk at the building?

*

Is elevator to be operated by electricity ? State what kind of
circuit will be available ? Also give Voltage if constant pres-
sure is employed ? or number of amperes if arc circuit is used ?

What is capacity of dynamo which will supply the current, and
how many lights and how many horse power for motors are
taken from it? (This information can be obtained from the
electric companies.)

Have you shafting in building from which elevator could be i
operated ? \

Have you boiler ? If so, what steam pressure is carried ?

!

What is the height of building

How many feet will car travel ?

\

I

Give size of hatchway.

What load is to be lifted in the car ?

At what car or platform speed is load to be raised ?
